Im heading down from Boston to Portsmouth in a few weeks and I was wondering where are the good beer stores? Are there any hidden gems? What kinda beers can I get down there that don't make it up my way? Foothills terrapin?
  2. I am also looking for a store list (checked the BA resource and didn't see a whole lot)
  3. well aren't you guys in luck. i happen to live in portsmouth, va. here's some places to check out:

    http://www.biergarden.com/ - downtown portsmouth
http://thebirchbar.com/ - 10 minutes from downtown portsmouth (in norfolk)
total wine - 15 minutes from downtown portsmouth (in norfolk)
public house - 10 minutes from downtown portsmouth (in norfolk)

i'd recommend checking out local stuff like: williamsburg alewerks, beach brewing, o'connor brewing, st. george, legend, starr hill, etc.

i checked seekabrew.com and compared VA to MA and recommend checking these out as well: bell's, new belgium and terrapin

  4. Grape and Gourmet in Virginia Beach has over 700 microbrews from aroung the world.
If you have a military ID, the Oceana NAS package store is supposed to have a good selection.
  5. Thanks for the input guys! So if I am looking to buy a case or so of beer, with a few bombers/750s thrown in, where should I head first? Coming up from NC for work (election industry), and always like to check out local bottle shops.
  6. total wine norfolk for sure...if you don't mind traveling 35 minutes to va beach then check out grape and gourmet.

you can actually see what both have in stock:
    http://www.grapeandgourmet.com/Microbrews.htm
and on the totalwine.com site just select the norfolk shop and then select pick-up/browse

  7. I couldn't find the link at grape and gourmet, so thanks for that! I checked total wine online as well; looks like this will be a crap shoot. Also, I heard some places in VA have Cigar City (on tap only?); is that true?

Places more northern in VA have Cigar City, I know I've had some in Richmond but never in Hampton Roads that I have seen.
  9. Gotcha. I don't mind mail-order, but if it was in the state and I was close, i was going to fill up the car
  10. the only package CCB that made it here was Jai Alai, Guava Grove, and Maduro Brown. of those, the only one that we have gotten a second shipment of since last November is Maduro, and that was a few months back. kegs of Ligaro and Table Saison pop up now and then in Richmond, but that's about it, so don't get your hopes up. also, the Norfolk TW is awful, go to Grape and Gourmet

While I agree Grape and Gourmet is far superior, what's wrong with TW Norfolk not saying it is great, just curious? (if I had to go to a TW the newly built one at Hilltop is way ahead of their other TW stores).
  12. maybe i'm spoiled in Richmond, but their selection is terrible. for example, i turned my brother-in-law on to sours last time i was down that way, so i went over to TW to grab him a few things, but they didn't even have Monk's, Duchesse, or Petrus- much less Tilquin or Hanssens- which are pretty basic for any bottle shop worth its salt. been in there three times in the last year without finding anything interesting (except the Double DBA they had just received and stashed behind the counter three weeks after RVA got it).

I scored some Cantillon Vigneronne there a couple months ago, so maybe I just have a soft spot for them. But yeah, selection wise I'd put them miles behind G&G or the Hilltop TW.
  14. huh, lucky you, zero Cantillon in Richmond; from what i hear it has something to do with Hop and Wine being assholes

Maybe being nit-picky here, but agree the TW in Norfolk is the worst, for example they were the only TW in HR that did not get any Parabola.
Anyways OP - try to go to Bier Garden one night and Birch if possible.
  16. Really now. That's an interesting find!
  17. OP if you're going to a Total Wine in the Hampton Roads area, check out the one in Virginia Beach. Its a fair deal larger than the other area ones, with a bit of a better selection. Bier Garden is fantastic. The Public House is great. Cogan's pizza, in downtown Norfolk, is a decent little spot, but you probably won't get any rare finds there if that's what you're looking for. A Whole Foods just opened up in Virginia Beach, and they're displaying some local (ish) beers on tap that are pretty good.

I haven't even heard of a bottle of Cantillon hitting Richmond in the last 2-3 years (missed out on the Rose de Gambrinus that hit C'ville a few months back by about 45 minutes) but hey, we did get half a case of JP La Roja last summer.
  19. i agree with grape and gourmet being the best in VA beach, i you get some time try heading into moyock (just across the border in NC take 168 through chesapeake) about a 5 minute drive past the border is the moyock chips wine and beer. we get a selection of beers not available in va but our cap is 15%abv on beer. if you come in on the weekend ill be manning the store in moyock. shoot me a pm of some stuff your looking for and i can see what i have on the shelf for ya!

Sort of off topic, but is there any plan to get your Moyock store to match your KDH shop?
  21. from what i know now no, although i would love having a tasting room in the moyock store. we are running beer tastings on thursdays and we have a beer club that meets up at the moyock store once a month, which is something we dont have at the beach location. if you or any one else is interested in the beer club give em a ring at 252-435-1629. not trying to slam this thread with advertisments but the more patronage and interest generated the better we can make our little beer oasis's in the desert that is the coastal carolina region
  22. Oh, so H&W decides to spread a little love to an oft underserved and neglected beer geek community and now they're assholes? I'd take RVA's beer selection over HRVA's anyday. It's all good, I'll be double-dipping in both markets come Bolt Cutter time, sapping as much of the sweet Founder's shelfwalez from Richmond's distro as possible!
  23. what i heard came from people who work for various distributors and bottle shops, it's not just my own whining about "but i want Cantillon!" and if you're one of those people who takes a day off from work to poach at a bunch of stores you never otherwise patronize, well, that's your business
  24. Yeah baby! Truck chaser ritecheah!
  25. Anyways, I'll just be hitting Total Wines and maybe WF, it's not like I'm going to every little indie beer store. They normally just hook up their regulars, as it should be. And I'm not a trader or ebayer it's all for my friend's, family's, and I's bellies.
